Best time to visit Naples: honest month-by-month guide
When is the best time to visit Naples?
May and September–October are the best months overall — warm, manageable crowds, and reasonable prices. April and early June are strong alternatives. Avoid July and August if you dislike heat and crowds, especially at Pompeii. November to March is the best value but some coast accommodation closes.
Quick answer: May and September–October are the best months. April and early June are strong alternatives. Summer is peak season with high heat and crowds. Winter is the best value but with reduced services.

| Early spring | March | 10–16 °C | Low | Low–medium |
Spring (March–May): the recommended season
Spring is the best all-round season for most visitors. Weather is warm but not oppressive, the archaeological sites and streets are comfortable to explore, and the Amalfi Coast is beautiful before the July–August rush.
March: Still unpredictable — some warm sunny days, some rain. Naples is quiet; Pompeii is comfortable. Ferry services to the islands begin increasing. Easter week (dates vary) brings domestic Italian tourism; accommodation prices spike around Easter weekend.
April: One of the best months. Average 16–19 °C, reliable sunshine, the city at its least crowded tourist season. Pompeii and Herculaneum are a pleasure — you can move freely, find shade at the walls, and spend 5 hours without heat distress. The Amalfi Coast reopens properly in April; the sea is still too cold for swimming (15–17 °C) but the driving and bus routes are beautiful.
May: Consistently ranked as the top month. Temperatures 18–24 °C, sea temperature rising toward swimable (18–20 °C by late May), full ferry services, flowers on the coast. Most accommodation and restaurants on the Amalfi Coast are fully open. Pompeii is busy but manageable. Book accommodation 6–8 weeks ahead for May.
Summer (June–August): high season with caveats
Summer is peak season for good reasons — the sea is warm, the islands are beautiful, and the days are long. But it requires planning.
June: The best summer month. Still before the absolute peak; temperatures 22–27 °C; Capri and the coast are extraordinary. Book everything in advance. Pompeii in June is doable with an early start.
July: Temperatures 25–31 °C, peaks above 35 °C at archaeological sites. July is the most crowded month. The islands, Amalfi Coast, and beaches are at full capacity. Pompeii in July is a challenge — the Forum has no shade and the heat by 11:00 is significant. If you visit in July, arrive at site opening (09:00) and leave by 13:00. See pompeii-in-summer-heat-tips.
August: The hottest month. Temperatures can reach 38–40 °C at exposed sites. The 14–15 August Ferragosto period sees many local Naples restaurants and some shops close — this is the Italian national holiday when residents leave for the coast. Some neighbourhood establishments close for 2–4 weeks around Ferragosto. The city is actually slightly quieter than July as locals leave. See naples-in-august-closures for what to expect.
Autumn (September–October): close second best
September–early October is increasingly popular and for good reason. The sea reaches its maximum temperature (~25 °C) in September, making it the best month for sea swimming. Crowds begin to thin after the August peak. The light is extraordinary for photography.
September: Often the best month for combining city and coast. Temperatures 22–28 °C, sea 23–25 °C, festivals and local events (Feast of San Gennaro on the 19th). Pompeii is still warm but more manageable than July–August. The Amalfi Coast has good weather and slightly reduced crowds.
October: Excellent for the city and ruins — cooler, atmospheric, and almost tourist-free by late October. The coast begins closing from mid-October. Sea swimming becomes cool (20–22 °C) but still pleasant for hardy swimmers. Accommodation prices drop. The naples-in-autumn guide covers October specifically.
Late autumn and winter (November–March): value season
November: The shoulder season transition. Still warm enough for comfortable city walking (12–18 °C). Pompeii is peaceful. Most Amalfi Coast accommodation closes or reduces. Ferry schedules to islands reduce significantly; rough weather can cancel crossings entirely.
December–January: Christmas brings the presepi (nativity scene) tradition — Via San Gregorio Armeno in the centro storico fills with artisan shops selling elaborately detailed presepi figures. The tradition is genuinely extraordinary and worth visiting for. See naples-at-christmas-presepi. Temperatures 7–12 °C; the city is atmospheric, tourists are few, and accommodation prices are low.
February: The quietest month. Cold by Naples standards (7–10 °C), some rain, excellent for museum-focused trips. Carnival (Carnevale) brings street festivities in the week before Lent.
March: Beginning of the recovery — temperatures rising, more sunshine, the city starting to reopen. Still good value, less crowded than April. The naples-in-spring guide covers March through May.
What affects your choice most
If Pompeii is your priority: April–May and September–October. Avoid the midday heat of July–August.
If the Amalfi Coast is central: May–June and September–October. Some closures in winter.
If you want the islands (Capri, Ischia, Procida): May–October for full services; November–April is reduced or uncertain.
If budget is the priority: November–March (excluding Christmas) offers the lowest accommodation prices, easiest-to-access museums, and a different perspective on the city.
If you want Naples city culture: Any month. November–March gives you the city almost to yourself; May–September gives you the outdoor café and waterfront culture.
Frequently asked questions about the best time to visit Naples
Is September better than May for Naples?
Both are excellent. May has slightly more reliable weather and the coast is opening up after winter. September has warmer sea temperatures and better swimming but some risk of early autumn showers. Choose based on what matters more to you — swimming and sea activities favour September; mountain weather and hiking (Path of the Gods) favour May.
Should I avoid Naples in August?
The heat and crowds in August are real drawbacks. However, if August is your only option, the city is actually less crowded than July because Italian residents leave for the coast. Pompeii in August requires early morning visits and heat tolerance. The islands and Amalfi Coast are at maximum capacity. Ferragosto closures affect some local restaurants. See naples-in-august-closures before booking.
What is the weather like in Naples in October?
October is warm (20–25 °C early month, dropping to 15–20 °C late October), generally sunny with some rain. It is one of the most comfortable months for sightseeing — Pompeii is pleasant, the city is not crowded, and restaurant options are full. The Amalfi Coast begins winding down from mid-October.
Is Christmas a good time to visit Naples?
Yes, specifically for the presepi tradition. Via San Gregorio Armeno is extraordinary in December, lined with artisan workshops creating elaborate nativity scenes. December crowds are moderate (busier on Italian school holidays). See naples-at-christmas-presepi for the full December guide.
How hot is Pompeii in summer?
Air temperature at Pompeii in July–August averages 30–33 °C but feels higher in the Forum due to the lack of shade and reflected heat from the stone surfaces. Bring at least 1.5 litres of water per person, arrive at opening (09:00), and plan to leave by 12:30–13:00 before the worst heat. The pompeii-in-summer-heat-tips guide has specific strategies.
When is the cheapest time to fly to Naples?
January and February typically have the lowest airfares to Naples Capodichino (NAP). November (excluding Thanksgiving/Christmas) is also good value. Summer flights (July–August) and Easter weekend are always expensive. Book well in advance (3–4 months) for summer to secure the best prices.
